Celebrate Garden Wildlife Week: Transform Your Garden into a Haven for Nature!

This week (June 2nd - 8th) is Garden Wildlife Week, a timely reminder to appreciate the amazing creatures that share our outdoor spaces. From the industrious buzz of bees to the comical antics of hedgehogs, wildlife plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Here at Precision Paving & Landscaping, we believe that even the smallest gardens can be havens for wildlife. So, this Garden Wildlife Week, why not join us in creating a more wildlife-friendly space?

One brilliant way to encourage a wider variety of wildlife is to incorporate features that provide them with food, shelter, and breeding grounds. In this blog post, we'll focus on everyone's favourite prickly visitor: the hedgehog.

Hedgehog Holes: A Simple Addition with Big Benefits

Hedgehog numbers have been declining in recent years, due to habitat loss and fragmentation. However, by creating a hedgehog highway in your garden, you can offer them a safe passage and a cosy place to rest.

Here's what you'll need to create a hedgehog hole:

  • Location: Choose a quiet, secluded spot in your garden, away from potential dangers like ponds or busy roads.
  • The Hole: Make a 13cm x 13cm hole in the base of your fence or shed. You can also create a dedicated hedgehog house using wood and bricks.
If you are planning a garden makeover, ask your garden designer or landscaper to include hedgehog-friendly features such as a hedgehog feeding station (add camera's so that you can watch their comings and goings from the comfort of your living room) and gaps in fences so that hedgehogs can travel between gardens.

Top Tips for Creating a Hedgehog-Friendly Garden

  • Let Your Lawn Grow Wild: Hedgehogs love feasting on beetles and bugs found in long grass. Leave a small area of your lawn uncut to provide a natural feeding ground.
  • Swap Boundary Fences For Native Hedges: Not only are hedges easier for these lovely creatures to navigate, they harbour all sorts of delicious snacks for our wild friends to enjoy.
  • Create a Log Pile: A pile of logs and branches offers hedgehogs excellent shelter and breeding opportunities.
  • Add a Hedgehog House: Available from most good pet stores, or, if you are handy with a set of tools, you can easily make one yourself. Line it with straw and maybe, just maybe, a hedgehog will hibernate in it all winter long.
  • Avoid Pesticides: These chemicals harm not just pests but also the insects hedgehogs rely on for food. Opt for natural pest control methods whenever possible.
